Fort Jefferson
Photography By Daniel G. Hughes
|
In
the Winter of early 1995, while on a consulting contract in Marianna, Florida, I had the
urge to drive down to the Florida Keys, and work on a Cruise ship. My host, Dr.
Richard Schulz insisted that I take the time to sail out to the Dry Tortugas National
Park, and visit a historical Civil War Fort named Fort Jefferson. The islands were
discovered by Ponce de Leon, and named in reference to the Giant Sea Turtles that frequent
the area. 70 miles west of Key west, Florida, in the Gulf of Mexico, like a cluster of
jewels, lies the Dry Tortugas Islands. Nestled among spectacular coral reefs, shipwrecks,
and sandy beaches, lies Ft. Jefferson, America's foremost example of 19th century coastal
defense. |
